Moros y Cristianos, the typical rice from Cuba, is a dish similar to congre, but with black beans. It is said to originate from Africa and is a culinary unique to the island. Sometimes, rice and black beans are served separately.

Its origin comes from the Battle of Alcoy, which took place in 1276 between the people of Alcoy and the troops of the Muslim leader al-azraq at the gates of the city of Alicante.

Some history

The legend says that Saint George appeared riding a horse and was the one who turned the battle in favor of the Christian side. For this reason, the celebration occurs close to his feast day, as he is the patron saint of this festival.

The name Moros y Cristianos comes from historical and cultural times.

"Moro" is the way in which the Spaniards called the inhabitants of Arab villages. The Arabs dominated the territory now known as Spain.

With the arrival of the Spaniards came the most famous cereal of all Latin America, rice, which changed Spanish cuisine and became one of the dishes most associated with it worldwide.

After many battles, the Christians managed to make the Moors leave and reconquer their territory.
