Although this generous tuber is famous thanks to the Cubans, its origin dates back to the Orient, in Japan and China (the latter with over 70% of its worldwide production), where this food was brought hundreds of years ago to spread across American lands. Its application is not limited to cooking; it can also be used as a medicinal alternative.
A Particular History
In the USA, its history is quite unique. Around the 1930s, a bright orange-fleshed sweet potato was introduced as a 'name' in the state of Louisiana (USA).
This was a marketing strategy intended to distinguish it from a similar but firmer variety grown in the northeastern United States.
Boniatillo

El boniato es una verdura rica en vitamina C, por lo cual es una excelente opción para consumir algo nutritivo, agradable y sabroso. Con tan solo unos pocos ingredientes, resulta un delicioso postre caribeño digno de elaborar hoy mismo.
That orange variety was in no way a true yam.
In America
In Central America, where this type of potato originated, it could be called camote. Cubans named it boniato because the words mean "sweet and harmless" as opposed to hot or spicy.
It may be harmless, but it’s also very good... and it is less sweet than our sweet potato. Its flavor is similar to that of a chestnut.
Bonuses are not as sweet and moist as other sweet potatoes, but many people prefer their more fluffy texture and delicate flavor.
Boniato asado

Cubans use boniato to prepare liqueurs, as well as in their specialty with mojo, and countless healthy recipes suitable for the diet of children and adults at home, such as mashed, fried slices, pancakes, soups, and baked dishes...
