Vizcondes are a sweet treat inherited from Spanish tradition, arriving in Cuban lands thanks to colonization. This recipe uses custard and sponge cake instead of the classic María cookies, maintaining its delicious ancestral flavor.

Ingredients

2 Day-old glory bread or day-old rolls

1 cup of Sugar

½ cup of Water

1 Lemon peel

2 cups of Milk

2 tablespoons of Sugar

4 tablespoons of Cornstarch

1 Egg yolk

1 teaspoon of Vanilla

Preparation

Step 1 : The day-old bread is sliced ​​into approximately 2 cm thick slices.

Step 2 : In a saucepan, sugar and water are mixed to prepare the syrup, placed over low heat, and the lemon peel is added.

Step 3 : Boil the mixture until a thick syrup is obtained.

Step 4 : In another saucepan, warm the milk and add 2 tablespoons of sugar.

Step 5 : Dissolve the cornstarch in cold milk, add the vanilla and egg yolk.

Step 6 : Beat the mixture well and set aside until the milk in the saucepan boils.

Step 7 : When the milk starts to boil, add the cornstarch preparation and stir until a thick custard is obtained.

Step 8 : In a mold, place half of the custard.

Step 9 : Dip the bread slices in the syrup, avoiding soaking them too much.

Step 10 : Then, stack them on top of each other in the dish and cover with the other half of the custard remaining in the saucepan.

Step 11 : Let it cool and place it in the refrigerator to chill.

Step 12 : For decoration, you can use caramel or cover with chocolate straws.
